The BBC recently screened a documentary showing how this many thousands of years' old Chinese therapy helps in a variety of conditions including acute and chronic pain. They showed a patient in China having open heart surgery with no anaesthetic, just acupuncture! Some of our own recent successes have included frozen shoulder, arthritis, back pain and migraine – to name but a few.

The Team

At The Health Works we have an international team of acupuncturists (George Askounis, Catherine Aubin, Josephine Cerqua and Vera Gibson-Wong) from Britain, China, Greece, France and Italy, who also practice:

•  Acupressure,
•  Auricular Therapy
•  Tui Na Remedial Massage
•  Shiatsu
•  Kanpo Herbal Medicine
•  Buteyko Breathing Method for Asthma.

Pregancy/Natural Induction/Fertility

We have developed good relationships with midwives who have been sending women here for natural inductions. Acupuncture is a beneficial therapy for pregnant women when labour is delayed. A chemical induction is more likely to have a highly medicalised labour with lots of intervention. Here our acupuncture team can help to start labour naturally and gently. (Other choices for induction are Homeopathy and/or Reflexology, also available at The Health Works .)

Treatment of Children

Vera has completed a course in Obstetrics with Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine incorporating massage techniques.

Some causes of ill health

Acupuncture like all holistic forms of medicine focuses on improving the overall well-being of the patient, rather than the isolated treatment of specific symptoms. Health can be affected by a number of factors including emotional states such as anxiety, stress, anger, fear or grief; poor nutrition; weather conditions; hereditary factors; infections; toxins, and trauma.

Conditions treated

Some of the many conditions that are treated with acupuncture are: pelvic pain (common in pregnancy); depression; osteoarthritis in the knee; hay fever, rhinitis, sinusitis; blood pressure problems; migraines; menstrual problems; skin problems……

We offer a FREE 15 minute consultation for anyone wanting to know more about a particular treatment.

( Our team is registered with the British Acupuncture Council. The highest standards of needle hygiene are observed in this clinic with only new needles being used and then disposed of with the strictest methods. )

About Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a system of healing which has been practiced in the East for thousands of years.   Although often described as a means of pain relief, it is in fact used to treat people with a wide range of illnesses.   Its focus is on improving the overall well being of the patient, rather than the isolated treatment of specific symptoms.

According to Chinese philosophy, our health is dependent on the body's motivating energy, known as Qi, moving in a smooth and balanced way through a series of channels.

Qi consists of equal and opposite qualities, Yin and Yang, and when these become unbalanced, illness may result. The flow of Qi canbe disturbed by a number of factors.   These include emotional states such as anxiety, stress, anger, fear or grief, poor nutrition, weather conditions, hereditary factors, infections, poisons and trauma.
